JOINT STATEMENT: Girl-Centered Organizations Condemn Femicide in Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya, 26 January 2024 | We, the undersigned girl-centered organizations, express our deep concern and condemnation regarding the alarming rise in femicides in Kenya. The heart-wrenching murders of Rita Waeni and Starlet Wahu are only the most recent in a disturbing upward trend.

Femicides not only represent a blatant violation of human rights but also underscore the urgent need for comprehensive and immediate action to address the root causes of gender-based violence.

We stand in solidarity with our fellow women leaders in Kenya who are demanding that the President of Kenya declare femicide and violence against women and girls a national disaster. The government must take swift and decisive measures to protect lives and ensure justice for the victims.

We call upon the Kenyan authorities to:

  1. Declare femicide and violence against women and girls a national disaster, acknowledging the severity and urgency of the issue.

  2. Implement and enforce laws that protect women and girls from violence and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

  3. Allocate resources to support comprehensive programs addressing the root causes of gender-based violence, including education and awareness campaigns.

  4. Strengthen law enforcement and judicial systems to ensure swift and fair trials for perpetrators of femicide.

As feminist organizations, we are committed to supporting the efforts of women in Kenya and globally to eradicate violence against women and girls. We believe that a society free from gender-based violence is not only possible but essential for the well-being and progress of every individual.

Together, we urge all stakeholders, including the government, civil society, and the international community, to join hands in the fight against femicide. Let us work collectively to create a world where we can live free from fear, violence, and discrimination.

Sincerely,
